Crosswalk art project

Safety in Art: Enhancing Safety and Connecting Generations

Ivins Inspired, in partnership with the Ivins City Arts Commission and a range of local stakeholders, is excited to move forward with the Safety in Art community initiative.

While we were not selected for the 2024 AARP Community Challenge Grant, this project is too important to pause — and we are actively seeking alternative funding to make it a reality.

Frequently Asked Questions

Please reach us at ivinsinspired@gmail.com if you cannot find an answer to your question.

Safety in Art aims to transform key crosswalks in Ivins into vibrant, professionally painted works of public art. These artistic crosswalks are designed to:

  • Improve pedestrian visibility
  • Encourage slower traffic speeds
  • Beautify public spaces
  • Connect generations through meaningful design

This initiative is a creative solution to a practical challenge: improving safety at high-use intersections while reflecting the spirit of our community through art.

With Ivins experiencing growth and more traffic at critical intersections like Center Street and Red Mountain Boulevard, enhancing pedestrian safety is a top priority. A recent Strong Towns Walk Audit, conducted with support from the Washington County Strong Towns Leadership Team, confirmed this roundabout as an ideal pilot location.

This intersection serves:

  • Students and families from Vista School
  • Staff and residents of the Southern Utah Veterans Home
  • Students and faculty of Rocky Vista University
  • Cyclists, walkers, and runners of all ages

Community feedback shows strong interest in traffic calming, public art, and improved pedestrian infrastructure, as reflected in the Ivins General Plan and the 2023 Resident Survey.

The audit brought together a broad, engaged group of local voices:

  • Vista School students, parents, and staff
  • Veterans Home staff and residents
  • Santa Clara-Ivins Police and Fire Chiefs
  • School Resource Officers
  • Ivins City Council member and Mayor
  • Ivins City Engineer

Their input helped identify areas where artistic crosswalks would make the most impact — and reinforced the need for safer, more welcoming walkways for residents of all ages.

Crosswalk painting will be completed by a professional contractor to ensure:

  • Long-lasting materials (paint will last 7-8 years)
  • MUTCD (Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices) compliance
  • Safe installation and road closures, if needed

While the painting won’t be a community event, the design process will include public input through workshops and artist-led sessions. The Ivins City Arts Commission will coordinate with local artists to ensure the designs reflect our community’s values and stories.

  • 94% of Ivins residents report walking or biking regularly
  • Over 32% of the population is age 65 or older
  • More than 50% of households want additional traffic calming features
  • 51.6% of residents favor public art in outdoor spaces

This project also advances the Ivins Arts Commission’s goal of establishing a vibrant “Arts Corridor” and supports the Ivins General Plan’s call for public art and walkable streets.

We’re currently fundraising for this project and welcome:

  • Donations from individuals and local businesses
  • Partnerships with organizations that value community connection, wellness, and creativity
  • Volunteers for future workshops, events, and outreach

Your support helps Ivins become safer, more connected, and more inspiring—one step, and one brushstroke, at a time.
